For the record: Burdon details wrong in Friedman column

August 14, 2013

Because of a writer's error, a column by Thomas Friedman on Page B5 of Sunday's Cape Cod Times misattributed a sentence about a singer, Eric Burdon, to The Independent of Britain. The sentence — "Burdon was just the latest of a rising number of artists and intellectuals who have started boycotting Israel over the occupation issue" — was by Friedman. Also, Friedman incorrectly reported that Burdon would not perform in a concert in Israel, but Burdon did perform.

Because of a photographer's error, a photo caption on Page A1 with the story on the OCEARCH shark hunt was incorrect. The man on the left is Alec Wilkinson, a writer for The New Yorker magazine. The person at right is crew member Jack Sparks, an audio engineer with the ship's film crew.

Also, because of a reporter's error, the accompanying story had an error about the OCEARCH boat. The vessel is 126 feet long.

Because of a production error, the captions for two photographs on Page A4 on Sunday were flipped. The Pope John Paul II High School caption should have run with the top photo, while the St. Francis Xavier school caption should have run with the photo below.

Because of incorrect information provided to the Times, an announcement on Page B2 of Sunday's Times gave the incorrect phone number to register for the "Come Walk With Me" bereavement support group at Our Lady of the Cape Parish of Brewster. Mary Morley's correct number is 508-385-8942.

Paines Creek Beach, described on Page A2 of Wednesday's Times, is not accessible by road for either pedestrians or vehicles until further notice because of culvert construction. It can be reached by walking from the Mant's Landing parking area, according to the Brewster Chamber of Commerce.

Because of an editing error, the "Week After" section of the calendar on Page 17 of Friday's CapeWeek had the incorrect date for Elements Theatre Company's production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Performances for that show have ended.

Because of incorrect information provided to the Times, a story on Page A1 of the Aug. 15 edition contained errors about Bryan Crossman, the first person to receive donated socks from the "Socks for Soldiers" drive. Crossman is a cousin of Rotary Club member Jim Saben and is a second lieutenant in the Army. Also, because of a reporting error, the length of time Crossman has served in the military was incorrect. He has served for six years.

Because of a reporting error, an article on Page A1 of Tuesday's Times about the Falmouth wind turbines misstated the issue to be brought before town meeting. The selectmen have the authority to choose an operating plan for the turbines, but they need town meeting approval to create the fund that will collect revenue from their operation to pay for mitigation efforts.

Because of a reporting error, a story on Page A1 of Friday's Times contained inaccurate information about the suspension of Provincetown Police Chief Jeff Jaran and the appointment of Lt. James Golden as acting chief. Town Manager Sharon Lynn announced at a selectmen's meeting Thursday night that she has suspended Jaran with pay. She appointed Golden as acting chief.

Because of an editing error, a story about the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Page A1 of Tuesday's Times had an incorrect headline. Because of the partial government shutdown, the NRC expects to furlough all but 300 workers by Thursday. Staffing at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station, which is owned and staffed by Entergy, will remain at the usual levels, and two resident NRC inspectors will remain on duty there.

Because of incorrect information provided to the Times, a brief about a tribute to the U.S. Navy's birthday on Page A4 of Wednesday's Times had a wrong phone number for Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The correct number is 508-830-6601.
