PROVINCETOWN — Squid are running around MacMillan Pier, a regular occurrence this time of year, but the crowds who jig for them have not been so reliable.
Harbormaster Rex McKinsey announced Tuesday that he is temporarily shutting down the pier to nighttime fishing until further notice because the squid-fishing scene “has gotten out of hand again,” he said.
The families and individuals who jig off the pier have left squid ink on his office walls and the pier, as well as beer bottles, food containers and other trash, McKinsey said.
“While we have increased our evening staffing, it can be difficult to patrol the whole pier when the crowds get out of hand,” McKinsey wrote in a separate email. “This is not just a group of visitors but so-called townies as well. When most follow the rules, it is manageable and we hope this ‘shot across the bow’ will help regain that control.”

Re: MacMillan Pier closed to night fishing
IN BRIEF
P’town pier reopened to night squid fishing
PROVINCETOWN — MacMillan Pier has been reopened to squid fishing, as long as anglers follow the rules.
Earlier this month, fishermen catching ink-squirting squid stained the deck of the pier and left beer and nip bottles in their wake, prompting Harbormaster Rex McKinsey to close the pier to night fishing on July 21.
He allowed it to reopen Friday, but it will close again if people disregard the rules, he said.
Night fishing must take place only near the harbormaster’s office, not on boats or other docks, he said. There is no parking and no open containers of alcohol allowed, he said.
“We have rules and they will be enforced,” McKinsey said. “If violated, we’ll use a large hammer.”

Squidding banned from Town Pier

(Aug. 11, 2016) Jigging for squid has again been banned from the Town Pier, after an increase in complaints this summer about trespassing and property damage from ink not just on the docks but on boats tied up at the pier.
Harbormaster Sheila Lucey said yesterday that effective immediately, squidding is prohibited on the pier, which will be patrolled by members of the harbormaster's office or police department during evening hours when squidding is popular. The small cephalopods are drawn to the lights along the docks and are relatively easy to catch.
Late-night squidding – dropping a multi-barbed hook into the water off the pier in an attempt to catch the squid – is a popular island tradition, but the ink, which is released as a defense mechanism by the squid when they are pulled from the water, is almost impossible to remove without extensive scrubbing using pure bleach, which itself poses public safety and environmental concerns, town officials said.
