News Corp. sells the Cape Cod Times

HYANNIS – News Corp. today announced the sale of the Cape Cod Times and its other publications in the Dow Jones Media Group.

The sale was announced upon its completion today. Terms were not immediately disclosed.

The buyer was an affiliate of Fortress Investment Group LLC, the majority shareholder of GateHouse Media Inc., which will oversee operations of the newspapers.
The newspapers sold also include The Barnstable Patriot, The Inquirer & Mirror on Nantucket, The Standard-Times in New Bedford and other weeklies in Southeastern Massachusetts.

Across the company, 10 employees were let go – four senior corporate managers and six others who had “corporate” status, Cape Cod Times publisher Peter Meyer said.

With the sale, the Dow Jones Local Media Group has been renamed Local Media Group.

Cape Cod Times Timeline

1936: Cape Cod Standard Times first published as an independent edition of the New Bedford Standard Times. Publisher is E. Anthony and Sons.

1958: The Cape paper remodels its offices at 319 Main St. and installs new presses.

1966: Ottaway Newspapers buys the E. Anthony newspaper properties, including the Cape and New Bedford papers.

1970: Ottaway merges with Dow Jones. Cape Cod Standard Times begins a morning edition on Saturdays.

1973: The Sunday editions of the New Bedford and Cape Cod papers become independent of each other.

1975: The paper changes its name to the Cape Cod Times.

1984: The Times becomes a morning paper.

1988: The Times moves its production facility to Independence Park.

1997: The Times publishes its first online news stories at www.capecodonline.com.

2007: Dow Jones is purchased by News Corp.

2008: News Corp. announces it will keep Ottaway papers.

2007: Betep's Page 0 starts. clap 

April 2013: News Corp. announces its intention to sell the Times and seven other daily newspapers, 13 weeklies and affiliated websites under the Dow Jones Local Media Group.
