Times takes 51 New England journalism awards

February 11, 2013

The Cape Cod Times received 51 awards in the New England Newspaper & Press Association's 2012 Better Newspaper Competition, including general excellence for the staff and journalist of the year for Patrick Cassidy. The awards were announced Saturday at NENPA's annual convention at the Park Plaza in Boston.

"This was an amazing showing by every member of the staff, and a testament to how dedicated the journalists of the Cape Cod Times are to delivering the best work in word, picture, illustration and video," said Times editor Paul Pronovost. "That fact was never more evident than on Saturday, when the staff stayed on the Cape to deliver the latest news on the storm to readers rather than attend the awards event."

Cassidy received the top individual prize from the press association for the third year in a row.

"We are so happy to see Patrick recognized for his hard work and the great stuff he produces every day," Pronovost said. "He truly deserves this honor."

Times veterans honored with 'master' status

By CAPE COD TIMES
May 04, 2013

DEDHAM — Two Cape Cod Times journalists were honored with prestigious awards from the New England Society of Newspaper Editors on Thursday.

Ron Sikora, a longtime copy editor and the Times' lead Page A1 designer, received the Len Levin Master Copy Editor Award, while K.C. Myers, a veteran reporter who recently completed a major series on the Cape's pill epidemic, received the Master Reporter Award.

"It's so rewarding to see Ron and K.C. being recognized by their peers for the great work they do," Editor Paul Pronovost said. "K.C.'s name is known and respected throughout New England journalism circles, and Ron's work, while behind the scenes like all good editors, is a big part of our newspaper's success for many years."

NESNE judge David Sullivan, assistant managing editor of The Philadelphia Inquirer, noted "the high quality of (Sikora's) pages and headlines," in addition to his strong knowledge of the Cape and Islands.

"Part of the role copy editors have played in newsrooms has been keepers of institutional memory, those who know how it has been done and where we have been. The best copy editors, particularly in this age, marry that with a sense of where we are now and where we must go."

"K.C. Myers doesn't shy away from tough stories," wrote Duchesne Drew, managing editor of the Star Tribune in Minneapolis, who judged the Master Reporter category. "She runs toward them and she runs hard. ... Myers gets her mind around complex issues, builds the trust essential to putting a face on the statistics, and she then crafts stories in a way that helps readers understand, care and, in some cases, take action."

The awards were presented Thursday at NESNE's 2013 Journalism Awards Ceremony at Northeastern University's Dedham campus.

October 12, 2013

NATICK — The Cape Cod Times has been named the Sunday Newspaper of the Year by the New England Newspaper & Press Association. It is the third year in a row and sixth time in seven years that the Sunday Times has received this honor.

In addition, the Times received a Publick Occurrences Award for its April series, "Pills that Kill." Established in 2000 to recognize the 300th anniversary of Publick Occurrences, the first newspaper published in America, the award recognizes individual and team excellence in journalism.

By CAPE COD TIMES

Posted May. 27, 2016 at 7:48 PM

The Cape Cod Times has been named Newspaper of the Year in the annual Best of Gatehouse contest, which recognizes the best journalism among newsrooms across the country.

Its strong reporting and editing included enterprise projects on climate change, endangered turtles, heroin addiction, and a nuclear power station’s safety violations. Spot news coverage was also spot-on. Commitment to digital and mobile storytelling is growing, too,” the judges wrote.

“We're so pleased to receive this national recognition. The journalists here strive for excellence in everything they do and I consider myself very fortunate to be part of this talented group,” Executive Editor Paul Pronovost said.

The Times competes in the large daily division of Gatehouse Media, which includes newspapers such as the Providence Journal, Columbus Dispatch, and this year's Pulitzer-winning Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

Judges also recognized Pronovost as Editor of the Year.
