Boat adrift without fuel off Barnstable found after overnight search

BARNSTABLE – An overnight search for a boat adrift off Barnstable Harbor ended when the vessel was found beached near Bass Hole.

Barnstable fire officials received a report of a boat drifting without fuel near Barnstable Harbor at about 11:42 p.m., said Barnstable Fire Capt. Edward Guilford.

According to the reports one of the boat's occupants had jumped off the boat and swam ashore in the harbor where he called for help, Guilford said.

Fire officials launched the department's 27-foot Whaler and were in touch with U.S. Coast Guard Station Cape Cod Canal but didn't have information on where the boat was and after an hour couldn't find the vessel, Guilford said.

Fire officials were contacted again by the Coast Guard at 2 a.m. with more information about the boat's possible location, he said.

They found the 23-foot Sea Fox cabin cruiser beached near Bass Hole, Guilford said.

The two people onboard were uninjured and declined a tow back to the dock, he said.

Boaters safe after long night at sea

BARNSTABLE - Some boaters are safe back on dry land after a long night at sea. According to reports their vessel ran out of gas and they started drifting in the current off Barnstable. After several hours of searching by Barnstable Fire and the Coast Guard, firefighters located the vessel beached on Bass Hole and assisted the occupant back to port. No one was injured.

Truck and trailer submerged in Saquatucket Harbor

HARWICH PORT - Fire and police officials responded to Saquatucket Harbor this afternoon after a truck and trailer rolled down the public boat ramp and into the water.

Nobody was in the truck at the time and nobody was injured, according to fire officials.
The owner of the 2009 Chevrolet 2500 pickup truck was retrieving a 21-foot boat at the ramp when the accident occurred.

Boater inadvertantly fills sewage area with gasoline

HYANNIS -- A recreational boater inadvertently put 135 gallons of gasoline in his vessel’s sewage containment area Friday afternoon at Hyannis Marina, according to the fire department.

The sewage containment area was drained and no one was injured in the incident, Fire Captain Eric Farrenkopf said.
The fire department was called at 2:24 p.m. to the marina’s fuel dock at 1 Willow St., Farrenkopf said.

Firefighters made sure the electrical power was disconnected from the 25-foot boat, and then coordinated with marina officials to lift the boat out of the water. The gasoline was drained into 55-gallon drums. The vessel was then placed on an outdoor boat rack and vented, allowing any remaining vapors to dissipate

Sailboat grounds off Wellfleet

WELLFLEET – Wellfleet Firefighters were called after a sailboat with three people on board gounded on Egg Island off Powers Landing Beach around 6 p.m. No one was injured. Wellfleet crews assisted by Truro Firefighters reached the parties as darkness fell and brought them safely to shore. Crews had to respond on foot to the scene as the water was too shallow for the rescue boat to reach them,

Man pulled from water after boating mishap in Falmouth

FALMOUTH – A man was pulled from the chilly waters in Falmouth Sunday morning after either falling or being thrown from his boat. Passerbys reported a boat going in circles off the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute around 10:30 a.m. The victim evaluated for possible hypothermia. Falmouth Police, Falmouth Fire-Rescue and the Coast Guard and Mass Environmental Police all responded to the scene.

Video: Boat grounds on sandbar at Bass River

DENNIS – A call to the Dennis Fire Department Sunday at 6 p.m. of a vessel collision in Bass River near the Yacht Club turned out to be a boater who got himself stuck on a sandbar. Dennis Fire and the Harbormaster sent boats to help the stranded boater. The man along with a woman and a child were brought to shore while crews await the incoming tide to refloat the vessel. No injuries were reported.

Search on for man missing from boat on Buzzards Bay

       A multi-agency search is underway for a person in the water after a commercial towing company vessel found an unmanned boat operating in Buzzard's Bay on Saturday afternoon, according to the Coast Guard.

       The 30-foot vessel was in gear and underway in the area of the west entrance to the Cape Cod Canal, a Coast Guard press release said.

       Other agencies, including harbormaster offices in Wareham, Marion and Bourne and the Massachusetts Environmental Police, also joined the search, said Environmental Police Major Patrick Moran earlier this evening.

       The Coast Guard said it was searching an area from Buzzard's Bay to Nye's Neck and plans to search through the night and into tomorrow.

       Coast Guard stations Woods Hole and Cape Cod Canal launched a 45-foot response boat crew and 29-foot response boat crew, and Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod launched a MH-60 helicopter crew.

       The boat is believed to have had only one man aboard, Moran said, and the wife of the man said he left Stony Point Dike off Wareham to get gas in Onset.

Mariner safe after near sinking in Provincetown Harbor

PROVINCETOWN – A mariner is safe on dry land after an ordeal in Provincetown Harbor. The unidentified boater was able to call 911 after his 19 foot Mako began taking on water just inside the breakwater in the harbor. The Provincetown Harbormaster’s Office raced to the scene and was able to tow the vessel to MacMillan Wharf. The Coast Guard responded with two pumps to dewater the vessel. It was not immediately clear what caused the vessel to begin taking on water.

Coast Guard, boaters rescue missing persons from water off Harwich

Boater finds unmanned boat with motor running off Allen Harbor

Two people are safe after the boat they were in was found empty with the motor still running off Harwich Wednesday. According to a United States Coast Guard release, the Coast Guard and several other agencies responded after a boater notified the Chatham harbormaster that they had found an empty boat south of Allen Harbor around 3:39 p.m.

Personal items were found in the empty boat and the motor was still running. The Coast Guard, which monitors VHF radio transmissions, deployed a 45-foot rescue boat from Coast Guard Station Chatham. That crew arrived on scene minutes after the initial call was made.

The USCG crew began a systematic search of the area surrounding the location where the boat was found. The Harwich harbormaster collected the boat and provided information to other agencies involved in the search.

As the search continued, the crew of the sailing vessel Eva Marie, spotted a woman in the water and brought her aboard. The woman was transferred to the Chatham harbormaster's vessel and taken to Saquatucket Harbor around 5:15 p.m. There, the woman was treated by Harwich Fire & Rescue for fatigue and mild hypothermia, the release said. The water temperature at the time was 72 degrees.

The woman was also reunited with her male companion who swam over a mile to shore in search of help after the two fell from their boat. He was located by Harwich police officers.

"Local harbormasters and the Coast Guard have always had an extremely close working relationship and when a crisis like this occurs our history pays large dividends, resulting in seamless execution in this case," said Chatham Harbormaster Stewart Smith. "We train together and share a history as professional mariners." Smith also credited the members of the boating community who watch over each other.

In addition to the Chatham harbormaster and Coast Guard Station Chatham, Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Coast Guard Sector Southeastern Command Center, the Harwich harbormaster, the Harwich Police Department, Harwich Fire & Rescue and the Yarmouth harbormaster assisted with the search and rescue.

"The interagency teamwork that we have on the Cape is fantastic," said Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael Butler, the logistics coordinator for Coast Guard Station Chatham.

Two rescued from capsized dinghy off Oak Bluffs

OAK BLUFFS – Oak Bluffs Police report that on Wednesday at approximately 8:50 a.m., officers and members of the Oak Bluffs Fire Department responded in the 40-foot Oaks Bluff patrol boat to Nantucket Sound off Pay Beach and the Inkwell for a capsized dinghy with two people in distress in the water. The Oak Bluffs harbormaster also responded to the area as did two Oak Bluffs lifeguards on a rescue kayak and rescue board.

The two lifeguards arrived on scene first and were able to keep the two males above water. Neither of the males was wearing a life jacket. One lifeguard was able to bring one of the males to shore safely with the kayak while the other lifeguard kept the second male above water on her rescue board.

On arrival, police officers and fire fighters aboard the patrol boat were able to help the second male out of the water and on to the patrol boat. They were also able to save the capsized dinghy and some of the belongings that remained in the boat. Neither of the males reported injuries as a result of the incident.

This incident should serve as a reminder to always wear a life jacket or have one easily accessible.

One arrested after boating accident off Tisbury

TISBURY – Early Monday morning, at approximately 3:05 a.m., Tisbury units received a report of an unmanned boat circling the waters in the area of West Chop.

Approximately five minutes later Oak Bluffs Police were dispatched to the beach on Temahigan Avenue for a report of a boat that crashed into a dock. Officers responded and located an unoccupied 26-foot center console completely out of the water crashed on shoreline rocks and resting against a dock.

An investigation by Oak Bluffs and Tisbury units and the US Coast Guard revealed two individuals were operating the boat in Vineyard Haven outer harbor when they collided with a boat that was anchored. The collision forced the two individuals overboard while the boat continued to operate.

The two individuals were able to get on to another boat after being forced into the water. The US Coast Guard located the individuals and brought them to shore. Both individuals declined on medical treatment.

SPECIAL REPORT: 12 rescued, including 9 children, after boat capsizes in Buzzards Bay

WAREHAM – Twelve people were rescued from the water Wednesday afternoon after a sail boat overturned near Hog Island Channel.

The Coast Guard, Buzzard’s Bay Task Force, other government agencies, and Good Samaritans are being credited with rescuing the 12 people.

Petter Officer Nicole Groll said a good Samaritan called watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England just after 4:30 reporting that the 18-foot sail boat overturned.

Witnesses reported that the boat appeared to be overloaded with passengers and it was struggling against the waves.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape and a 45-foot boat crew from Station Cape Cod Canal launched. When the 45-foot boat crew arrived on scene, a good Samaritan aboard the Disco Volante had recovered nine of the 12 people from the water.

Smaller vessel capsizes in crash off Chatham bar

CHATHAM — A man was pulled from the water after two boats collided and one of them capsized at about noon Monday off Chatham, according to a U.S. Coast Guard official and the Chatham harbormaster.

The collision between the two recreational vessels occurred east of the Chatham bar, Chatham Harbormaster Stuart Smith said. A 23- to 24-foot boat with two males aboard hit a 19- to 20-foot boat with one male aboard, and the second boat capsized, according to Smith.

The man on the smaller boat fell into the water but was pulled out by a good Samaritan, according to Smith and Cynthia Oldham, a spokeswoman for the Coast Guard.

The capsized boat had to be hauled out of the water by its owner, Smith said.

An investigation of the collision is being handled by the Massachusetts Environmental Police, according to Oldham. The Coast Guard was notified but is not involved directly in the investigation, she said.

The larger boat was brought to the Chatham Fish Pier.

The weather was clear and Smith said Monday night that it appears there was a “failure to look before he throttled up” on the part of the operator of the larger boat, but that officials are still gathering information.

Nobody was injured, Smith said. Chatham firefighters did not respond to the call, according to a Chatham fire official.

The crash was still under investigation as of early Monday night, according to state Environmental Police spokeswoman Katie Gronendyke.
