August 09, 2011HYANNIS — To the victor belong the spoils, and after six years, there were some fairly large spoils.
On a stormy Sunday afternoon, seven cousins, ages 10 to 20, headed to Ryan Family Amusements on Main Street with a precious load — a brown leather briefcase filled with seven pounds of arcade tickets, collected with plenty of patience over six summers of rainy-day gaming.
"We wanted to save up," said Lily Dallo, 12.
The group comes together every summer at houses in Centerville and Osterville.
Popped open, their briefcase revealed bag upon plastic bag of tightly packed red paper tickets — 17 clear-wrapped packages in all — a team effort by Lily, her brothers Nicolas, 10, and Michael, 14; Ali Giovannone, 20, and her brother Domenic, 16; Paul Mansfield, 19, and his sister Sarah, 17.
"Would you possibly accept "» all of these?" Domenic asked Leslie Ruiz, who was working the prize counter at the bowling alley and arcade where the video games spit out red tickets to winners, redeemable for prizes. Ruiz acquiesced, though bemusedly, motioning for them to pile their loot into a tub for weighing.
"They might not all fit in here," she said.
Undeterred, they loaded the trailing paper chains in two rounds, and Ruiz announced the grand total — 15,817 tickets.
"We should get the water guns!" yelled Nicolas.
While the others eyed candy and plastic jewelry, Paul said the big prize of the day would be two coveted wooden skimboards — small, flat surfboards that sell for at least $50 each.
They'd have plenty left over, of course.
"We're going to bowl and then buy what we feel like, I guess," he said.
Ruiz said she'd never seen anything like it — a few thousand tickets, occasionally, but nothing like this.
What did she think?
"Brilliant," she said.

7 kids and 3 last names. There's a lot of remembering to do!
I remember playing "PONG" at the Hyannis bowling ally. I have some wicked cool 1960's Colonial Candle Company team shirts too.
