Dire ramifications come with closing Cape canal

October 02, 2014

I'm in amazement in reading some of the opinions on what to do with the canal.

Fill it in? Close one end? Hydroelectric? Lower the existing bridges?

At the end of the day, no matter how many bridges you put up, the Cape can handle only so much traffic. What's next from these people with these thoughts? A five-lane superhighway to replace the Mid-Cape?

Not to mention the fisheries that would be greatly affected closing the canal.

The canal gets used commercially as well as recreationally. I might add the recreation side may have a bigger economic impact on the state of Massachusetts and its neighbors than some people think. Not to mention the marinas and boatyards that would be affected as well.

The Cape doesn't need to have the canal filled in, or more bridges built. Possibly some consideration could be given to expanding public transportation.
