Serial killer Clifford Olson, who was convicted of 11 murders in the Vancouver area in the early 1980s, has died in custody of apparent natural causes at age 71, prison authorities said Friday.
Olson died in a health care facility in Ste-Anne-des-Plaines outside Montreal, the same town where he was serving 11 concurrent life prison terms, the Correctional Service of Canada said in a statement.
Sharon Rosenfeldt, the mother of one of his victims, told AFP she was informed by the commissioner of the Correctional Service last week that Olson had cancer and it had spread.
Olson abducted, raped, strangled, stabbed and bludgeoned to death 11 boys and girls aged nine to 18 on Canada's Pacific Coast in 1981, including a German tourist.
Among the victims was Rosenfeldt's 16-year-old son, Daryn Todd Johnsrude.
Following his arrest for the attempted abductions of two more girls, he confessed to the murders and revealed the whereabouts of the bodies as part of a deal with police that provoked public outrage.
Authorities paid Olson's wife CAN$100,000 for his cooperation.
