Post Office Closings
From the Cape Cod Times:
Island post offices on the chopping block
July 28, 2011
Post offices on Cuttyhunk and Nantucket are among 43 in Massachusetts that are being studied for possible closure as part of a U.S. Postal Service plan that could close as many as 3,700 post offices nationwide.
One of three post offices on Nantucket — Nantucket Station 1 at 44 Pleasant St. — is being considered for closure, according to the Postal Service.
The only post office on Cuttyhunk is also facing closure. Cuttyhunk is the outermost of the Elizabeth Islands off the coast of the Cape and Martha's Vineyard. Its post office serves the town of Gosnold, which comprises Cuttyhunk and several other islands including Nonamesset, Uncatena, Weepecket, Gull, Naushon, Pasque, Nashawena and Penikese. There are about 120 registered voters in the town of Gosnold and about 56 year-round residents on Cuttyhunk.
The Postal Service is studying the closure of 3,700 local offices, branches and stations. In some areas, stores or small local businesses may take on some of the functions of post offices, according to the federal agency.
People served at targeted post offices have 60 days to file comments. A decision to close a post office can be appealed to the Postal Regulatory Commission.
