It's been going on since the time of telegraphs. I found it annoying back in the days of BBS (Bulletin Board Systems) before the (now) dinosaurs CompuServe and AOL showed up. I love the stories of resumes and cover letters written in text shorthand with the failing writers complaining that "It's the way we speak now!".
