Slaughter can be humane if it causes no suffering

November 27, 2010

As much as some people may have been horrified by seeing the seemingly ruthless couple in the Nov. 23 "Living off the land" story slitting those poor turkeys' throats, I want to point out that this is the best and most humane way of slaughtering a bird.

At commercial slaughterhouses, which are the ones that process your grocery store bird, the slaughter process is much different. The birds are stuffed into trucks and overcrowded. Some of them suffocate. Others when thrown into the trucks are bruised and have broken bones.

As much as I love animals, I also love eating meat. We cannot expect the world to stop eating meat. What we can do is ensure the animals we eat were kept and slaughtered as humanely as possible.

How we treat animals in this world sets a precedent for how we treat each other.* Animals do not deserve to suffer, certainly not an animal that's giving up its life to nourish you.

Thanksgiving is the time when we voice our thanks for what we have, and one way to be thankful for the food we have is to be more conscious of the conditions our food animals are raised (and slaughtered) in, and buy our meat accordingly.

In keeping with my horror of the article I`ve been commenting on, the above letter- as inhumane as some of the realities describe, is enlightening as well as touching on the difference between humane vs downright cruel. To put `cruel` mildly.
